Tick-borne encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine is given in the National Vaccination Program for all people over the age of three who are long-term permanent residents or those who reside long-term in holiday apartments in risk areas of the tick-borne encephalitis.

National Institute of Health and Welfare defines the risk areas each year. Outside the risk areas you can take the vaccine at your own expense or it may be included in your occupational health care. Vaccination recommendations depend on the occurrence of TBE in the area. The more you spend time in nature when the ground is unfrozen, the more necessary the vaccine is. Tick-borne encephalitis occurs on the Åland Islands and locally on coastal areas and in continental Finland.

TBE incidence in Finland (in Finnish)

True or false

Vaccinations are no longer needed?

Smallpox is the only disease that has been globally eradicated. Other diseases, such as measles, are a good example of the importance of maintaining vaccination coverage.

Vaccinations cause autism?

The study that linked the MMR vaccine with autism has been proved false. Vaccine safety is carefully monitored and the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks.

Do vaccines contain dangerous amounts of toxins?

The quantities are much lower than what we take in from food and beverages and our living environment, in general.

Vaccinations are not necessary for nearby travel?

The most important vaccines for travellers are the same basic immunisations that are recommended to be kept up to date even in Finland. Even those travelling to nearby regions should get the Hepatitis A vaccine and the influenza vaccine. Tick-borne encephalitis is found in regions including the Swedish archipelago.

Vaccines should not be administered to pregnant women?

Many vaccines benefit the health of the mother as well as the child.
